Thanks to everyone for messages received about my sleep problem... your kind thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated. Sleep gets easier every night I am happy to say!
Today is Valentines Day – hope those of you who have a ‘loved one’ have sent cards – if you would like to send a virtual card you can do so for free – just visit www.valentine.co.za and choose from the many cards there.
Tongith being a Monday, Captain Ken and I go to the dam to water ski. Yes it is Valentines Day but we jokingly say in the small print of our marriage contract, water skiing takes priority over just about anything. It is a good reason for us to celebrate tomorrow when hopefully the restaurants will not be as crowded.
Perhaps today is a good day to tell someone you care about that you love them... make the first move if you have had an argument... give someone a hug... give your pet an extra hug!
Romantic quotes from me...

A kiss is a lovely trick, designed by nature, to stop words when speech becomes superfluous. - Ingrid Bergman
Each moment of a happy lover's hour is worth an age of dull and common life. -Aphra Behn
Your words are my food, your breath my wine. You are everything to me. - Sarah Bernhardt
... and this is my personal favourite from Robert Sexton’s book An American Romantic:
I never knew that dawn could break with peace so deep and hope so wide, 'til that first morning when I awoke, and you lay sleeping, by my side.
Send in any quotes you love... that have some special meaning for you... and I will use at least one every week. Usual address! editor@saw.co.za

Coming Home Each week we will feature a question and answer sent in to the Company for Immigration. We hope these will help answer any questions you might have regarding any part of the coming home process. If you would like to send in your own question, please feel very free to do so.
We will also be featuring a great amount of information on the SAW Website (www.saw.co.za) under the Coming Home section. You can also find out info by visiting our newly relaunched site, South Africa Online (www.southafrica.co.za) and checking out the Coming to SA section.
Here is a bit more info...
Whenever and wherever South Africans meet, the surest way to start a lively discussion, is to ask someone for an opinion about emigration from or remigration back to South Africa. In 2002 we (i.e. the non-profit immigration service, Company for Immigration, and the trade-union, Solidarity) realized that the return of South African expats had become a fact and that their inputs are essential for the growth and development of the country. We are neither interested in a debate about the reasons why people leave or come back, nor about the merit of their decisions. We prefer to provide a practical service instead:
offering advice and assistance to prospective remigrants; addressing the problems which cause people to emigrate; and informing people about the pros and cons of emigration, to help them make an informed decision before leaving.

This week’s Q and A:
John, USA, asks: What are these new immigration regulations that I hear about?
Dear John, the regulations published recently are only draft regulations, in other words the current immigration act and regulations of respectively 2002 and 2003 are still in place. However, changed regulations are imminent. Watch the web site of the Department of Home Affairs in this regard – www.home-affairs.gov.za.

The Good News – South Africa and Australia strengthen ties South Africa and Australia, two countries which have a great deal in common in addition to good weather and a penchant for backpacking around the world, are in the process of strengthening ties in trade, sport and several other areas.
Last week Deputy Foreign Minister, Sue van der Merwe, met her Australian counterpart, Bruce Billson, the Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Trade, at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Mr Billson was in South Africa at the same time as the Australian soccer team, who arrived to play an international friendly match at Absa Stadium in Durban.
Despite being stern rivals in several sports, especially rugby and cricket, South Africa and Australia already have strong trade relations. Australia is South Africa’s third largest trading partner in Asia, after Japan and the Peoples Republic of China. The two countries currently enjoy R11.4 billion worth of bilateral trade, and this figure is expanding steadily. Trade between the two countries is currently concentrated in the areas of mining and minerals, cars and motor-components, chemicals, services and tourism.
Australia, which is the world’s 12th largest economy, is also a big investor in South Africa. The merger of Australia’s BHP Billiton and South Africa’s Gencor in the 1990s created the largest mining company in the world. With many South Africans having relocated to Australia, business relations between the two countries continue to grow stronger.
Mr Billson, who had also completed a visit to neighbouring Botswana, pointed out that South Africa and Australia share common values and a common history, and he emphasised that the two countries will continue to work closely together with that as a common base.
Mr Billson is also in South Africa to address the South African Institute for International Affairs on “South-South Trade: Winning from Liberalisation”, in which he will encourage freer trade between the two countries, and to participate in the African Mining Conference at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
As if it had been arranged by diplomats from each country in order to ensure continuing friendly relations, the soccer friendly match between South Africa and Australia – which Mr Billson attended – ended as a 1-1 draw.

Mind Massage Mindfulness, S*x and Romance...
Oh, my! Let's continue our lightHEARTed focus on the heart for February, shall we? Last week, we talked about the power of laughter. This week, we'll talk about another physical activity that is good for your heart...and mind. Mindful lovemaking, anyone? Heartfully yours, Maya ;-)
Mindfulness and S*x: Right There, Right Now (Note: Please excuse the asterisks as I attempt to dance around the Sp*M detect*rs...) Mindfulness is downright s*xy. After all, what's hotter than a partner who is paying attention? Being Right There, fully in the moment, is about as perfect as it gets. So, it comes as a bit of a surprise to me that we don't really use the term "mindfulness" in relation to loving relationships--let alone love in the afternoon. This should be common, mainstream, slap-your-forehead-and-say-"Duh!" kind of knowledge. I don't pretend to be an expert on what goes on between the sheets (although I did conceive and give birth to four children within five years) but I do know this: it is absolutely completely impossible to have a truly satisfying romantic s*xual moment unless you are Right There in it. Oh, sure, it's possible to experience physical pleasure when your mind is on something--or someone--other than that which shares your sheets. But we're talking about meaningful, connected, one-with-the-universe kind of lovemaking, and that, my friends, calls for Mindfulness with a capital M. It doesn't have to be tantric. You don't have to master every k*ma sutra position. It doesn't need to be burn-the-house-down wild. You don't even need any props or helpful devices. It can be your regular Tuesday night missionary position in your socks and still be ka-ZAM--if you're paying attention. Oh, and here's a not-so-secret secret: if you are paying attention, chances are good that your partner will be affected and grateful enough to start paying more attention as well. See how that works? Just as some people expect to have meaningful family dinners with the television blaring, some folks attempt to have feel-the-earth-move s*x while conjuring grocery lists or project memos in their heads. Not possible. By bringing mindfulness to the b*droom and beyond, you will also bring a greater sense of intention and focus, and your body will do a lot better when your mind is on the same page. Instead of following those magazine articles that tell you "what do to in b*d to drive him/her wild!!!!!" it would be more beneficial to focus on what NOT to do. In other words, do only that which you are doing, and nothing else. The next time you get lucky, get mindful. Be Right There, fully immersed in your sensations, connections, and loving communications with your partner. Put your whole heart--and mind--into it. Now, that's s*xy.
True Confessions Yes, it is true that I have been working on a collection of stories about mindfulness, and yes, it's true that the working title is "Go*d Head: Confessions of a Mind Masseuse." Well, who but a mind masseuse can get away with transforming "go*d head" into a perfectly acceptable phrase for mindfulness? It's not flowery or woo- woo. It's simple and clear. Perhaps it's time to commandeer this phrase. After all, it seems ridiculous that I would have to use an asterisk in the middle of the word "good"... Besides, the original meaning of the phrase is "a helpful and friendly person." Could we tie it to mindfulness? I'm opening the floodgates now and asking: what do YOU think? Please write to me at maya@mindmasseuse.com

52 Best Stories - The Value of a Quarter A New York City bus driver told this story upon his retirement. He had been working for the bus company for less than one year and still in his performance probation period. If he were dishonest or unkind in any manner, any supervisor would dismiss him immediately.
He picked up a fare on the Broadway Line near Times Square. He was a second generation American and was familiar with many languages as NYC is a melting pot of immigrants. The bus stopped promptly and the door opened and a handicapped lady needed assistance getting into the bus. The lady had some physical problems and it soon became clear she had a problem understanding English.
The driver helped the lady from the curb into the bus and told her the fare was 50 cents. The lady fumbled with her purse as she stood in an unsteady position. Then she reached inside and threw three quarters into the hopper. The driver immediately noticed the error and thought, there is an extra quarter for coffee later on.
The lady immediately moved down the isle to a seat. The driver looked in the mirror to insure she was seated and shut the door. He moved his foot from the brake to the gas as if to proceed and all of a sudden stopped in his tracks. He opened the hopper and removed the extra quarter and walked back to where the lady was. He handed her the quarter and she did not even respond.
They proceeded and near Battery Park the women exited --- the last one off the bus. As she left the driver thought, I'm a Christian and I'm sure I did the right thing. I do not need a "thank you" from her for doing what is right!
Several days later the bus company called a meeting to go over new safety regulations with all drivers. The district rep was talking and introducing the need for more care on the part of drivers. As he spoke the door opened and in walked the "handicapped" lady who had dropped the extra quarter in his hopper on the Broadway Line. The lady made her way to the front where the district rep was speaking.
As she stood next to the district rep, she called out in perfect English four names and asked all the men to come forward. It was now clear to everyone that she was an employee of the bus company. The first three men to arrive up front all received envelopes and were asked to return to their seats. The driver of the Broadway Line bus was asked to stand next to the lady.
The lady introduced herself as a bus inspector. She went on to tell how she entered all four buses and deposited an extra quarter in the hopper. The Broadway Line driver was the only one to return the quarter and after checking paper work from the other three drivers did not find mention of the extra quarter.
The three drivers were immediately dismissed while the Broadway Line driver was given immediate entry into the union and became a full-fledged driver.
So 25 years later the driver who picked up the Broadway Line fare that day told the story of how he almost threw away his entire retirement for a cup of coffee worth 25 cents.

One Man’s Australia (Editor’s note: This a ‘part two’ continuing on from last week’s article)
A broken mind in the Gulag
The story of Cornelia Rau's ordeal has gripped Australia for a week.
Her long months in captivity are forcing us to re-assess how we treat our mentally ill. Her treatment in Immigration detention is provoking more concern about what goes on behind the razor wire than any of the hunger strikes, riots or sewing up of lips has done.
She is one of us.
In her normal belligerent way the Minister for Immigration reminded Parliament how Australians can end up in Immigration detention. All it takes is a suspicious bureaucrat and you are incarcerated. The Migration Act requires only that the bureaucrat believes that someone is an unlawful non-citizen.
No court is involved. No proof is required. Suspicion is sufficient.
The Department of Immigration was told repeatedly, from the cells in Coen, north Queensland, to the Baxter detention centre that there was something seriously wrong with Cornelia Rau. The warnings came from diplomats, from refugee advocates, from lawyers. They were ignored despite the humanitarian issues they raised.
A woman as sick as Cornelia Rau cannot be trusted. Yet she does not lie - because she believes her delusions to be reality. And only her words suggested that she should not be in Australia.
She is a very sick woman - so sick that she could not take the simple step that would have identified her. All she had to do then or for the next 10 months to walk free was to tell them her name.
The first warning came on April 2nd from the honorary consul for France and Germany in Cairns, who, when called in to interview an assumed overstaying German backpacker, reported that Anna Brotmeyer - or Anna Schmidt - spoke such peculiar German that it was doubtful that she was German at all. Furthermore she could not name her parents and could not say where she was born.
Her accounts of how she reached Australia were variously that she had paid a people smuggler in Russia 1,000 Euros to get her to Indonesia or that she had walked through China. Reporting back to Immigration the same day the honorary consul said that it appeared that Anna needed urgent medical attention.
From April 5th when she was transferred to the Brisbane Women's Correctional Centre she left her Brotmeyer identity behind - becoming solely Anna Schmidt. According to the prison reform group Sisters Inside she spoke fluent, Australian-accented English. This was reported to Immigration.
But they placed the onus on Cornelia to give more information before they would do anything.
By the end of her 6 months in the Brisbane Women's' Correctional Centre the official verdict on Anna appears to have been that she was a recalcitrant German in her right mind who was refusing to co-operate with the Department of Immigration.
Anna was flown to Whyalla on 6th October and taken by van to the high security Immigration prison run for the Immigration Department by the US controlled company Global Solutions Ltd.
On admission she was seen buy a doctor and a psychologist who reported that she must be assessed by a psychiatrist urgently. This happened a month later - on 6th November. As a result four days later Baxter management contacted the South Australian Rural and Remote Mental Health Service at its headquarters at the Glenside psychiatric hospital in Adelaide for an assessment of Anna.
But by 16th November the health Service was told that Anna was "displaying behavioral problems only" and was now "well managed".
Anna was moved to the secure section of the camp, where troublemakers were housed. She was not cleaning herself properly, was leaving mess everywhere and was stealing other people's food.
The German woman in the secure section was now appearing on the radars of refugee advocates. The Asylum Seekers' Resource Centre heard on 29th November that a very sick girl needed help. The same stories reached the Alliance of Health Professionals for Asylum Seekers who alerted the German Consulate in Melbourne and visited the Baxter centre in the last days of December, being told by detainees that Anna was totally out of control, was screaming incoherently, was rolling around on the ground, was eating dirt, was smearing faeces. But they could not get to Anna.
They consulted lawyers to see if it was possible to mount a fight on her behalf to get psychiatric treatment. The advice they were given was that Anna might now be too sick to instruct a lawyer.
Catch 22.
For nearly a month the internet links between refugee advocacy groups were awash with reports about Anna. They were phoning and writing to the Minister for Immigration, the Federal Ombudsman, Amnesty International, South Australia' Public Advocate, lawyers groups, psychiatrists, churches - and then the mainstream media.
At the beginning of February the Fairfax Group ran a brief article in the Melbourne Age and the Sydney Morning Herald. Her parents, who were on holiday, were shown a clipping. They rang the NSW police. Photographs were emailed and within 24 hours Cornelia Rau was in the intensive care unit of the Glenside Psychiatric hospital.
The Howard Government has decided to hold an enquiry - in secret. However they appear to have misjudged the feelings of a horrified Australian public who now realise that the Howard Government is running a Gulag Archipelago that stretches beyond Australian territory - through Manus island in Papua New Guinea all the way to Nauru (both bankrupt States desperate for Australian aid money) where the detainees are beyond the reach of Australian law. They are Howard's Guantanamo Bay.
This story has some way to go yet.
DollarMakers A Story for You
Instead of my usual scintillating article, I decided to write a little story for you this week, dear Readers. Thanks for all your encouraging letters, by the way; much appreciated.
Cadfael Joshua had had a long day and was on his way to the corner store to get some milk. It was unusually quiet. The usual dog guardians, clutching their white plastic doggy-doo bags, were nowhere to be seen. A brisk wind clutched at his legs with the promise of a cool night and a free sample of winter from the snow on the nearby mountains. A few drops of rain plopped onto his Respect hat.
Suddenly, a swift black shadow introduced a bulky, unshaven lout who lunged at Cadfael – it was Weariness, brandishing a huge Fatigue stick over his hatless head of unruly hair. Cadfael reacted automatically with an Energy kick at the brute’s kneecap. Almost instantly, Worry moved in from the shadows with an automatic Fear, pointing directly at Cadfael, who whipped out a Self Confidence and knocked the weapon to the ground. Then he punched him out with a Tenacity. Two against one, but he was winning. He whirled around to see Weariness had extracted a concealed Guilt from his belt and was moving in fast. What now?
Without a second thought, Cadfael delivered a Self Esteem that knocked his opponent right off his feet, just as Worry heaved himself off the ground and was now approaching with the largest Self Doubt Cadfael had ever seen. Our Hero grabbed his faithful Self-reliance and fired three Beliefs right into Worry’s bewildered face. Only Weariness was left, who was lumbering forward wielding a shiny and sharp Laziness, switching it between hands, laughing and ridiculing Cadfael, who responded by blocking with Discipline and delivering a Proactive blow to the throat of his wily attacker. He finished him off with a Positive Expectation and one solid Integrity. It was over.
Sitting in his armchair after dinner, reading Atlas Shrugged, Cadfael poured himself a large Vision and put some Goals and Courage on a plate for a snack. Another day done. He had sown good things and he smiled, knowing that the future he was creating was bright, indeed. In his daily battles with Mediocrity and his treacherous band of Collectivists, Cadfael (which means Prince of Battle) knew that he had to stay alert and in shape. His personal trainer, Napoleon Hill, and mentor, Winston Churchill, along with his advisors, Ayn Rand and a stable of other winners, helped him stay focused and on track. They lived on his bookshelf and his CD rack, always on duty, always available to support and guide him. But he was the leader and the point man. He initiated, he took responsibility and he got the accolades.
In our daily lives, we’re wise to align ourselves with winners, Eagles and mentors who can sustain and direct us. Every choice counts.

These requests are from subscribers to SAWmail and or members of the SAW Web site. I print them in good faith.
Hi, I live in a small township outside Nelspruit and want to go work in the UK for a few years. I am a qualified pc technician and can fix most pc problems.
Problem is that I need a sponsor to help me get there. I would appreciate your input and assistance in helping me to find fellow South Africans abroad who would be willing to make an investment in me by paying my way to the UK, and then once I'm working there I'll pay the money back every month - and with interest. I'll even sign a contract to this effect. I REALLY wanna go live and work in England.
Thanx

I hope you can help me find the doctor who delivered my triplets in 1983. His name is Dr. Karim and he had an office in Kriel. We left South Africa for Canada in 1994 and he was going into politics. If anyone knows his whereabouts I would love to hear from them. Thanks. Gillian Barnard Canada gillian@mr-rrif.com

I live with my family in Plano, TX now, but I married a South African and lived in the Meredale area of Johannesburg for 15 years prior to that. My first job in South Africa was at the Chamber of Mines in Hollard Street, working for TEBA and there I met Denise Clay. Later we both worked for First National Bank at their old Computer Centre on Trump Street.
My husband took a contract in Wales, and at that time I lost contact with Denise. I do know that she married and her last name was Fosteras and that she had at least two children. She continued to live in her parents home on The Hill after they had both passed away and she had a slightly younger sister (Barbara I believe) who at one time lived in Glenanda and was a junior school teacher at Glenanda Primary. If any one knows how I can get in contact with Denise, I would be grateful.

Two South Africans - Michael Rennie (violin & vocals) and Nick Turner (ac.guitar & vocals) - form the core of this band. Both musicians have risen to the top of the South African scene playing for a variety of different bands and artists over the last seven years. Forming part of Sons of Trout, one of the country's top selling bands and best live acts, they have headlined every major music festival South Africa has to offer and toured extensively releasing four albums. In 2002 the two formed Mikanic and in 2003 released "Swimmin with the Women" to great critical acclaim and popular success.
Now based in New York City, Mike and Nick have found a new voice and completely original sound with Mikanic: Traditional African sounds and melodies blended with groove, jazz and R&B. Lyrically powerful, relevant and humorous, this is hip world music at its best.
In the past month, they have been joined here at i-Shebeen Madiba by Tony Cedras (keyboardist for Paul Simon, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, and South African Allstars) and by the legendary Vusi Mahlasela.

Women’s Words... This from Des Cowie des.a.c@btinternet.com
Fine This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.
Five Minutes If she is getting dressed, this is half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given 5 more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.
Nothing This is the calm before the storm. This means "something" and you should be on your toes Arguments that begin with "nothing" usually end in "fine".
Go Ahead This is a dare, not permission, DON'T DO IT!
Loud Sigh Although not actually a word, the loud sigh is often misunderstood by men. A "Loud Sigh" means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you over "Nothing".
That's Okay This is one of the most dangerous statements that woman can make to a man. "That's Okay" means that she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.
Thanks This is the least used of all words in the female vocabulary. If a woman is thanking you. Do not question it, just say you're welcome and back out of the room slowly.

SA ready to build on their series victory
South Africa captain Graeme Smith believes his side's 4-1 series win over England has firmly consigned their poor one-day run to the history books. "The bad run of defeats is definitely behind us now and we played superbly as a team in the series," Smith said after the hosts' three-wicket win in the final game on Sunday. "We had England in trouble on Sunday, but then let things slip a bit, but we still won, which is a sign of a good team," Smith said.
