    Editor's Message TOP

    Hi Readers

My apologies for not producing as much of the SAW Newsletter this week as usual.

In mitigation I offer the following excuse: I was tasked with establishing a new air-freight service that now operates five times weekly between Cape Town and Windhoek [Namibia]. All new operational, aircraft servicing, fuelling accounts had to be sorted out too, with more documentation aspects to follow.

The flights depart from Cape Town airport at 02h30 & arrive in Windhoek between 06h30 & 07h00 [sunrise]. The return flight to Cape Town departs at 19h00, arriving in the Mother City at 23h00. Even getting some crew-rest, this schedule makes severe demands on the 2-crew operation.

Fortunately the recent implementation of new radar flight following coverage, makes the flying a lot safer and radio contact is available most of the time.

A rather serious and sudden aviation fuel shortage has suddenly hit South Africa. This time it has affected the production and supply of Avgas* [a US acronym –*Aviation Gasoline]. The only refinery to produce Avgas is in Durban and inexplicably cannot deliver stocks. Rumours vary from end April to end-of-the-year before stocks will be available.

Other rumours are that supplementary shipments of Avgas per sea-freight are en-route, but inevitably delays and even price increases are likely to occur.

This all affects those operators of piston-engined aircraft, such as flight schools, air charter companies, some scheduled flights, cropspayers, air-ambulances, helicopter operators and private flights.

On Friday I saw the last of the Avgas supply at Cape Town airport being depleted, whilst reports from Durban are that there they have run dry already. Therefore only the fuel-depots around South Africa that have something left in storage tanks, can supply Avgas –for as long as stocks last. A very worrying situation indeed!

Readers may recall that an equally sudden fuel shortage hit Cape Town airport earlier this, year resulting in the grounding of several airliners. That time it was the supply of JetA1, which is a kerosene blend containing various essential additives. The blame was placed on the fact that refineries were busy converting to lead-free motor petrol. I wonder what excuses are being offered this time?

Furthermore you may recall that the Cape experienced rolling power outages and even Johannesburg was affected. Candle factories had to increase production to cope with the unexpected demand. This all impacts heavily on the poor.

If these problems are already occurring in 2006, what will the future bring?

Also newsworthy lately was the alleged $1.6 million cash-in-transit heist off a recently arrived SAA flight at the freight area at Johannesburg International Airport. About 10 armed robbers got away without a shot having been fired!

    Till next week.

    Theo

    An open letter to Khwezi

    Dear Khwezi*

Wherever you are, whoever you are, thank you.

Thank you that you are our star, our morning star, our Venus. May this strengthen you, and give you new hope, even though you were wronged on so many levels. Not least of all, by us, the media.

And for that reason, Khwezi, this praise song is for you.

You are not only a symbol to women, but to all South Africans. We, women and men, are furious, enraged by what we've heard and what we've seen. Therefore, Khwezi, thank you, for being our symbol for a new beginning.

A woman went into her kitchen to find a burglar loaded down with a bunch of stuff he was stealing from her kitchen. Not having any kind of weapon to scare him off, she raised her hand and said "Acts 2:38," and proceeded to quote scripture.

The burglar froze in place and didn't move. The woman called 911; the police arrived and were amazed to find the burglar still frozen where he stood.

"What did you say to him that kept him from moving?" they asked the woman.

She told them that she had simply said "Acts 2:38" and quoted scripture.

The police chuckled and escorted the burglar out to the patrol car. "Why did the woman's quoting scripture scare you so much?" they asked.

"Scripture?" said the burglar, "I thought she said she had an ax and two 38's!
