One of our great priviledges in South Africa must surely be the ability to visit wildlife reserves. Having overseas visitors to entertain, it's a 'must' to take them to see wildlife.

Our visitors this week were able to visit the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve where an elephant herd sidled nearby; where hippo, waterbuck, impala, warthog, kudu and a multitude of birds could be seen. Next time they hope to locate lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo.

At Dikhololo Reserve we could walk up real close to giraffe, kudu, eland, impala and red hartebees.

By laying food outside the doorstep of our lovely thatched-roof chalet we could observe a huge number of local birds and squirrels feeding. There were guinea fowl, quaill, geese, hornbills, grey loerie, swifts, hoepoe, sparrows and more.

Of course one must have a outdoor "braai" [a barbecue to non-South Africans] with all the traditional trimmings. At night there were very good views of the starlit heavens.

Lastly the lovely cool autumn weather was 'just right', as that area can be very hot in summer.

    Beware of the typical N!ger!an 4!9 $cam!

Here is a link to a typical $cam letter: http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/nigeria.asp

Note from the ed in chief... We were not able to put a letter into SAWmail as it kept failing our spam filters (hence the late delivery of SAWmail this week!)

Do what this letter says and lose all you've got!! Be Warned - Ed

Note from the Ed in chief...

Here are some news stories about various $cams:

  • Fell for That N!ger!an E-Mail $cam? See Him [Washington Post]
The files stacked up on Tom Polhemus's desk at the Fairfax County Police Department chronicle human gullibility.

A man who was corresponding with a woman on the Internet wired $6,000 to a bank in N!iger!a after she sent him a check. The check he received turned out to be counterfeit. A woman wired more than $11,000 to Canada, supposedly to pay taxes on winnings from a lottery she had never entered and from which she never saw a dime.

  • The Nightmare of N!gerian Letter $cams [ABC News]
You receive a letter or e-mail from somebody claiming to be an official (or the relative of an official) with the N!gerian government or a N!gerian company. The writer explains that a government contract has just been fulfilled and there is a surplus — usually between $10 million and $65 million. You're asked to provide a bank account into which the surplus can be deposited. In exchange, you will receive a commission.

Great deal, right? Of course not. It's a scam.

  • New World Cup $cam coming to your inbox [iol]
Latest email scam enticing people to forward their personal details in return for a share in millions of rands purportedly used for lobbying support for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

The sender of the email, which police's commercial branch said was a N!ger!an 4!9 $cam, claims to be the chairperson on a sub-committee on finance for the South African World Cup bid and says it has $21-million (about R125-million) of which only $8-million (about R48-million) had been spent for lobbying.

    F A M I L Y

I ran into a stranger as he passed by,
"Oh excuse me please" was my reply.

    He said, "Please excuse me too;
    I wasn't watching for you."

We were very polite, this stranger and I.
We went on our way and we said goodbye.

But at home a different story is told,
How we treat our loved ones, young and old.

Later that day, cooking the evening meal,
My son stood beside me very still.

When I turned, I nearly knocked him down.
"Move out of the way," I said with a frown.

He walked away, his little heart broken.
    I didn't realize how harshly I'd spoken.

While I lay awake in bed,
God's still small voice came to me and said,

"While dealing with a stranger, common courtesy you use,
but the family you love, you seem to abuse.

Go and look on the kitchen floor,
You'll find some flowers there by the door.

Those are the flowers he brought for you.
He picked them himself: pink, yellow and blue.

He stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise,
you never saw the tears that filled his little eyes."

By this time, I felt very small,
And now my tears began to fall.

    I quietly went and knelt by his bed;
"Wake up, little one, wake up," I said.

"Are these the flowers you picked for me?"
He smiled, "I found 'em, out by the tree.

I picked 'em because they're pretty like you.
I knew you'd like 'em, especially the blue."

    I said, "Son, I'm very sorry for the way I acted today;
I shouldn't have yelled at you that way."

He said, "Oh, Mom, that's okay.
    I love you anyway."

I said, "Son, I love you too,
and I do like the flowers, especially the blue."

    Family
Are you aware that if we died tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of days. But the family we left behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.

And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than into our own family, an unwise investment indeed, don't you think?

So what is behind the story?

    SA widow wins deportation battle

A Federal Appeals Court ruled that a woman ordered deported from Oregon to South Africa after her husband of 11 months was killed in a car crash has the right to apply to live in the United States.
The ruling Friday by the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco did not rule that Carla Freeman, a dual citizen of South Africa and Italy, could remain in the United States but said she could keep her status as a spouse and could apply for the right to stay.

Zim farmers want to lease land

At least 200 white Zimbabwe farmers who lost their farms during President Robert Mugabe's controversial programme of land seizures have applied to lease land from the government, a farming official confirmed Friday.

Doug Taylor-Freeme, the president of the Commercial Farmers Union (CFU), an organisation representing mainly white farmers said "over 200 applications" had been submitted to the government in the last two weeks.

    SA set for farm expropriations

The government is ready to order its first expropriation of white-owned farms, and has identified 355 properties it may seize if price talks with farmers fail, a senior land official said on Friday.

Chief Land Claims commissioner Tozi Gwanya said the government was determined to speed land reform and that expropriations - with farmers compelled to accept government payment for their land - now seemed almost inevitable.

"President Thabo Mbeki and senior leaders of the African National Congress did not understand, because they were almost completely insulated from crime", he said in his weekly newsletter on the DA website on Friday.

South Africans are paying even more for bank charges than was previously thought.

    SA firm finds egg-sized diamond

A small diamond company has uncovered a huge 235-carat gem - the size of an hen's egg - in South Africa only a few weeks after launching its operations, the firm said on Friday. Average house to top R800k

South African families must now earn R25 500 a month to be able to afford the average priced, middle-sized house - R11 000, or 75% a month, more than they needed to buy the average priced home four years ago. These figures, based on Absa's latest house price index that put average house prices at R765 400 in March this year, clearly illustrates just how much less affordable houses have become since 2002 - despite interest rates dropping by four percentage points over the same period.

Wine farmers plan to protect biodiversity

Wine producers in the Western Cape are taking decisive steps towards conserving one of the world's foremost biodiversity hotspots, the Cape Floral Region (CFR), and have incorporated the region's unique biodiversity into the marketing strategy for their wines.

The region was recognized as a World Heritage site in 2004 due to its enormous variety of indigenous plant species and its "outstanding value to science", yet many of its ecosystems are critically endangered.
The footprints of the CFR and the wine industry match almost exactly, and agriculture is one of the greatest threats to the CFR, Tony Hansen, the project director of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI), told delegates at the Cape Wine 2006's diversity conference this month. To protect this heritage, good biodiversity management practices need to be incorporated into the wine industry.

    Debate about elephant culling intensifies

Culling elephants has been an accepted management practice in many parts of Africa since the 60s.
Kruger Park's managers of the day believed that the elephant population (which had grown steadily since the park's inception in 1926) should be stabilized at around 7 000 individuals if severe habitat alteration were to be avoided.

Thus began an annual cull which resulted in about 17 219 elephants being killed or removed from 1967 to 1996. In the eyes of many African and international conservation agencies and individuals, culling as a management strategy had always been unpopular, so when SANParks announced a moratorium on killing, it was widely applauded.

Ramblings - What a difference an hour makes! by Mike Preston

I'm using a little poetic licence. An hour and a half is the time it takes to fly from Nice to Amsterdam, but the two places are worlds apart.

When I checked in at Nice Airport, the two raddled hags at the counter continued their private conversation, feigning ignorance of my presence for a good couple of minutes, clearly hoping I'd move to another counter so they have less work to do. As I had time to kill, I waited and finally the younger and less evil looking of the two turned to me with a scowl: "Oui ..."". Not, "May I help you", or "good afternoon", just, "Yes".

I said :"Bonjour" and put my ticket receipt on the counter and she scrutinised it, until the older raddled hag glared at me and demanded (in French) my 'identity document'. I pretended not to understand French and asked her politely (in my worst French) if she spoke English. The younger one repeated the demand only slightly less rudely, in English. I gave them my photocard driving licence - which has always been sufficient when travelling between other Schengen area states such as from Germany to Spain, last week from Spain to Holland, and even to Switzerland. The French make up rules as they go along to maximize inconvenience, after all they weren't actually on strike today, although they have been on strike most of the week, but they wanted to be as awkward as possible. I told her that photo ID is internationally acceptable and asked her to check with a supervisor. She threatened not to allow me on the flight - of course I had my passport up my sleeve so to speak - and disappeared to find a supervisor, whereupon I handed the other woman my passport. Yes, I am bloody minded.

I landed in Schiphol, was through the efficient airport within minutes, and onto a train to Leiden. At least, I thought I was... in fact I hadn't looked properly at the sign and it terminated, having dropped the others passengers in a suburb, in a siding. I walked through the train and found the driver having his sandwiches, explained what had happened, which he found highly amusing, and he then told me in perfect English and very charmingly to stay on board and that the train would be going back to a place where I could change. So I had my own private train for a few minutes - and an announcement made ín perfect English for 'the passenger to Leiden' to tell me which platform my correct train would depart from.

I have just had a walk in the late afternoon sun around this lovely university town, a coffee and a Dutch pancake by a canal, and now have to make the serious decision as to where to eat tonight. Tomorrow I shall be seeing 'Tsotsi', the award winning film.

Before closing, another 'French' incident. A few weeks a go I asked the cellphone company to send me a duplicate of my bill showing the full numbers dialled, as by default it only shows 6 figures. They emailed and said they could do this and I'd have to pay 6 Euros. Fine. Yesterday it arrived, with the 6 figure billing. I called them, told them they'd wasted two weeks of my time and billed me for sending something which was neither what I wanted nor what they'd promised me. What the guy said was the equivalent of 'tough'. No apology, no offer to rectify, nor even to cancel the 6 Euros charge. When I asked to speak to a supervisor he refused to let me do so. Customer service....... I sent the second rudest business email I've ever sent (the rudest, in case anyone wonders, was to Iberia, Spain's appalling excuse for an airline, a national disgrace). The problem is simple. It's a socialist country with a communist mentality. Nobody can get fired, however badly they do their job, and that, in a nutshell, is the reason for the appalling levels of customer service, along with the natural French dislike for everybody, including themselves. They are digging their own graves.

I shall enjoy my week in Holland!

    Tot siens

    MIKE

A Barbie we can relate to

Finally a Barbie I can relate to. At long last, here are some NEW Barbie dolls to coincide with her and OUR aging gracefully. These are a bit more realistic...

    1. Bifocals Barbie. Comes with her own set of blended-lens fashion frames in six wild colors (half-frames too!), neck chain, and large-print editions of Vogue and Martha Stewart Living.

2.Hot Flash Barbie. Press Barbie's bellybutton and watch her face turn beet red while tiny drops of perspiration appear on her forehead. Comes with handheld fan and tiny tissues.

3.Facial Hair Barbie. As Barbie's hormone levels shift, see her whiskers grow. Available with teensy tweezers and magnifying mirror.

    4. Flabby Arms Barbie. Hide Barbie's droopy triceps with these new,roomier-sleeved gowns. Good news on the tummy front, two-MuMus with tummy-support panels are included.

    5. Bunion Barbie. Years of disco dancing in stiletto heels have definitely taken their toll on Barbie's dainty arched feet. Soothe her sores with the pumice stone and plasters, then slip on soft terry mules.

    6. No-More-Wrinkles Barbie. Erase those pesky crow's-feet and lip lines with a tube of Skin Sparkle-Spackle, from Barbie's own line of exclusive age-blasting cosmetics.

    7. Soccer Mom Barbie. All that experience as a cheerleader is really paying off as Barbiee dusts off her old high school megaphone to root for Babs and Ken, Jr.. Comes with minivan in robin-egg blue or white and cooler filled with doughnut holes and fruit punch.

    8. Mid-life Crisis Barbie. It's time to ditch Ken. Barbie needs a change, and Alonzo (her personal trainer) is just what the doctor ordered, along with Prozac. They're hopping in her new red Miata and heading for the Napa Valley to open a B&B. Includes a real tape of "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do."

    9. Divorced Barbie. Sells for$ 199.99. Comes with Ken's house, Ken's car, and Ken's boat.

    10. Recovery Barbie. Too many parties have finally caught up with the ultimate party girl. Now she does Twelve Steps instead of dance steps. Clean and sober, she's going to meetings religiously.. Comes with a little copy of The Big Book and a six-pack of Diet Coke.

    11. Post-Menopausal Barbie. This Barbie wets her pants when she sneezes, forgets where she puts things, and cries a lot. She is sick and tired of Ken sitting on the couch watching the tube, clicking through the channels. Comes with Depends and Kleenex. As a bonus this year, the book "Getting In Touch with Your Inner Self" is included.

    Ten tips to write good

    1. Use commas only, when needed.

    2. Don’t use no double negatives.

    3. Prepositions are not to end sentences with.

    4. Keep you’re work neat and tidy.

    5. Never abbrev.

    6. Pronouns must agree with its antecedents.

    7. Verbs has to agree with their subjects.

    8. Use commas to separate words in a series parentheticals introductory clauses and the like.

    9. Read over your work to make sure you have not out any words.

    10. While a transcendent vocabulary is laudable, one must nonetheless keep incessant surveillance against such loquacious, effusive, voluble verbosity that the calculated objective of communications becomes ensconced in obscurity.

In a large cast-iron pot, sauté the chillies in a little oil and butter.
Cool the chillies before cutting them open and removing the seeds.
Finely chop the chillies and cloves of garlic. Return to the pot and add the cloves and stick cinnamon.
    Stir-fry for about one minute.
Add the leg of mutton to the pot and brown. Season well with salt and pepper.
Add the red wine, thyme, marjoram and origanum and turn the meat to coat it with the seasonings.
Add a little of the beef stock, replace the lid, reduce the heat and simmer for about two to two and a half hours or until the meat is tender.
Turn the meat every now and then and add more beef stock as needed.
Peel the potatoes while still hot and add to the meat half an hour before the end of the cooking time.
Place the meat on a hot serving platter and remove the string. Carve the meat, arrange the potatoes around it and pour the sauce over.
Serve with a green salad or green beans.

This dish will go very well with a KWV CABERNET SAUVIGNON
This wine exhibits good varietal characteristics with upfront cherry fruit which is in perfect balance with the vanilla flavours from the careful maturation in oak. It is ready for immediate enjoyment but will mature well for up to 3 years. Mmmm....

    Hi Theo

I see that you are also interested in Genealogy. I got hooked in the 1980s and have been involved in researching my families, as well as others' families, ever since.

Through the Internet, I have made friends across the world who share the same interest. It has lead to some face-to-face meetings with some of them, and to my first genealogy speaking engagement last year! What started off with a simple "I wonder where we came from?" eventually turned into self-employment where I published a South African genealogical newsletter and two e-books, maintaining a Web site, editing a genealogical society newsletter and researching South African families for clients worldwide.

I had an inspirational high school history teacher, which helped a lot. Working on a family history has been a great way to further learn and understand more about South Africa's history, and finding out about things that never made it to history text books. A recent project from a Scottish client led to a little-known part of Cape slave history. Other highlights have included reuniting long-lost friends in the USA and South Africa who last had contact 40 years ago, finding old family photos for an Australian who didn't know she had South African ancestors, and helping a Canadian author find background material for an Anglo-Boer War book.
