    Hi Readers
At least I have the Internet working tonight as I labour
    away at this Newsletter.
Last week's edition took ' forever ' to do due to the ultra-slow
    connection available.
In my part of the world the temperatures are hotting up into the thirties & there was a peak at 36 Centigrade already-hence the name for October here has been " Suicide Month "; thought to be when desparate people cannot take the heat and their troubles.

    'Till next time.

Tutu is SA conscience - Mandela

    08/10/2006 17:59 - (SA) Johannesburg -

Former president Nelson Mandela has paid tribute to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu for his role in bringing down apartheid and said he remained a moral light in the post-apartheid era.

In February 1990, Tutu was with Mandela on a balcony at Cape Town's City Hall overlooking the Parade where the African National Congress leader made his first public address after 27 years of imprisonment.
He was again at Mandela's side four years later - when his friend was sworn in as the country's first black president.
On Saturday, Mandela was among hundreds who honoured Tutu, as he marked his 75th birthday at a glamorous reception.

    Rural property holds promise

    08/10/2006 17:00 By: Evan Pickworth

Johannesburg - FNB's property economist John Loos says that while "platteland" (rural) residential property prices still lag the major metros quite considerably, many towns near the metros may have a lot going for them in the future.
"Obviously, the 'platteland' region experiences the same interest rate trends as the rest of SA, and with the major interest rate adjustment since 1998 being arguably the single-most important driver of residential property in SA, it is no surprise that these areas also experienced a massive price boom.

    Kuilsrivier Apartments From R380k

    2006/10/06

Cape Town's Kuilsrivier missed the boat in recent property boom, with the result being that it now offers excellent value.

This is according to the co-franchisee of a newly opened Kuilsrivier branch of a local estate agency company. "The fruits of economic empowerment are now becoming visible here. Kuilsrivier is currently experiencing a marked inflow of home seekers from feeder areas such as Blue Downs and Eersterivier, while sellers in Kuilsrivier are increasingly looking to buy up to areas covered by our main office in Tyger Valley," says Chas Everitt co-franchisee, Charl Louw.

Kuilsrivier apartments are still available from as little as R380k. Meanwhile, prices of freehold homes start at around the R700k mark.

Chas Everitt is opening a second office in Kuilsrivier that will be dedicated to developing the local residential property market "which is one of Cape Town's last few undiscovered property jewels," Louw concludes.

Renault To Move Into R38m Premises

    - 2006/10/06

Renault Gateway, whose business has grown to such an extent that it simply needs more space, moves into its new property early next month.
Motortown at Umhlanga Ridge continues its impressive growth with the completion of a R38m complex in Meridian Road for Renault Gateway.

"This is a state-of-the-art building which we will be very proud to hand over to Renault," said Bruce Winship of Grid. Grid also recently completed the new multi-million rand complex for Kia Motors at the corner of St Johns Road and Old Main Road in Pinetown.

Dealer principle at Renault Gateway, Tim Ridgeway, said they moved into Umhlanga Ridge about five years ago when sugar cane was still the most dominant factor in the area.
They witnessed phenomenal development on the Ridge and similar growth in their business, especially following Renault's return to the South African market about three years ago.

    Experts turn backs on SA

    06/10/2006 08:31 By: Garth Theunissen

Johannesburg - Most of South Africa's experts in exile aren't prepared to return home, a study has shown.
A study by Research Surveys into what it calls "The 'Scatterlings' of (South) Africa" shows that only around one-third of those who have left SA "could realistically be expected to entertain the idea of returning".

The willingness to return also depends a lot on the country that expatriates are living in.

Research Surveys says almost 50% of those living in Britain would consider returning, followed by 40% in Asia, the Middle East and other European countries.
Of those living in North America, only 20% indicate that they would consider returning.

'Zulu-Xhosa rift has civil war potential'

The perception that there was a conspiracy against ANC Deputy President Jacob Zuma because he was a Zulu had the potential to plunge the country into a civil war.

This was the stern warning from IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi at the 31st Annual General Conference of the party in Ulundi on Saturday.
Buthelezi told the more than 3 000 delegates gathered at the Emandleni-Matleng Centre that there was no evidence to support such a perception.
"This is playing with fire. Africa is sick and tired of civil wars, as we can see in Darfur. Bandying about this kind of allegation is most dangerous for us as a country. It can start an ethnic conflict which we do not need," he said.

A top South African diplomat has been kicked out of Britain after allegedly whisking one of his sons out of the country to shield him from a police investigation, according to diplomatic sources. Another son had earlier been sent home for alleged armed robbery.

The senior official at South Africa's high commission in London was given 28 days to leave and is due back in South Africa on October 17, according to sources close to the high commission.
The official's name is known to The Sunday Independent but cannot be published to protect the identity of his sons, who are minors.

    Zimbabwe woos Russian investors

    MacDonald Dzirutwe | Harare, Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe said on Friday it hoped to secure investment deals from a visiting Russian business delegation, a potential boost to its ailing economy and Moscow's own bid to raise its economic profile in Southern Africa.
Analysts said Russia's interest in the sub-region, following a determined push by China, signalled growing competition for Africa's natural resources as the two economies boom.

Make a day of it at the Thokizisa Centre

October 07 2006 at 05:59PM By Peta Lee

Nestled unexpectedly in the heart of Champagne Valley is an absolute jewel of a destination. It's the Thokozisa Lifestyle Centre, which is more than, well, a centre.

The charming thatched venue is a real delight, with the most exquisite little shops, galleries and tea garden you can imagine. It also, incidentally, houses the Central Berg Tourist Information Centre.

Where is it? Just 13-kilometres past Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal on the road to the Central Berg.

You could easily spend a day here, having breakfast in the outdoor (covered) restaurant, while hundreds of canary-yellow weavers and tiny sparrows twitter and hop around you. Then stroll from shop to shop, browsing through the most extraordinary collection of buyable items I've ever seen under one roof.

Study suggests pet therapy to avoid allergies

    October 07 2006 at 02:16PM

New York - Some people prone to allergies keep their homes pet-free, a study shows but such "avoidance" of furry companions only partly explains the lower allergy risk found among pet owners.

The findings, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, lend some support to the theory that growing up with a pet trains the immune system to be less reactive to potential allergy triggers.

A number of studies, for instance, have found that children exposed to a cat or dog early in life are less likely to develop allergies and asthma.

Falling in love with a digital camera

    October 07 2006 at 06:02PM

A long time ago, in the last century, I travelled overland to Kenya via Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania. It was quite an adventure in those days because there was unrest and a little bit of warring here and there. I guess nothing changes. We humans really can be a miserable species.

Anyway, to record this momentous trip, a very good friend, Herbert, lent me a fantastic camera. A Canon A1. He was indeed a good friend because I'd never before owned a camera and this was a fancy dude. My slides were not bad. In fact, I was told by photographer friends that they were pretty good and that I had a "good eye". Huh.
I returned Herbert's camera and splashed out on my own Canon A1.

    Bombarded with credit cards
    Iona Minton

    Question:
I'm blacklisted (I thought it was cleared, I called ITC to check my status and they informed me that I am still on the blacklist).

But I've now been offered a Truworths credit card, since then Woolworths has also sent me a credit card, and I am getting courtesy calls from my bank Absa. How is this explained?

    Answer:
When retail organisations send you cards or offer an account they have not yet gone through the process of checking your credit report. They only do this once you have accepted the card.

You will see the small print says "subject to approval" or "conditions apply". Banks keep data bases on their clients and every now and then they go on a sales drive.

Consultants divide the list between them and call the clients past and present. Again they have no access to your credit rating and if they are offering you a loan it will be subject to a credit bureau check.

    Hi there

I wonder if you could direct this to the Legal Beagle please.

I would like to find out what the situation is regarding parents and them immigrating to Australia. We have permanent residence. If my parents were wanting to come over to Australia permanently to live with us what would we have to do. Do we have to become citizens to sponsor them? How do we sponsor them? Do we have to sponsor them or can they apply on their own? What are the requirements for their entry. If they (I sincerely wish…)are loaded could they buy their way in?

I am asking these questions because my father is unwell and they are looking at all the possibilities if they are left on their own can the surviving relative come over to Australia to live with me. It is not a prospect I like to think about but it is worth knowing your options.

I look forward to your reply, thanking you in advance
    Kind regards

    Dear Heather

Your enquiry on the South Africans Worldwide website has been referred on to me.
I am the legal beagle for South Africans Worldwide and will try and be of assistance to you.
Your enquiry relates to the situation of bring your parents to Australia where you have permanent residence.

It is my suggestion that an Australian immigration expert should be dealing with this and ideally someone who is operating in South Africa so that there is proximity to enable your parents to do a face to face consultation.

I operate very closely with a network associate, Ivan Chait, of Ivan Chait & Associates who have an office in Pretoria. Ivan comes to South Africa to consult but has qualified people full time in his Pretoria office. I have included Ivan in the distribution of this e-mail so that he in turn can make direct contact with you through your e-mail address.

I trust that this is of assistance to you.

I happened upon your website by chance whilst looking for some old friends from SA. If you could help us get in contact that would be great. We lost contact after they moved from Belper in England in around 2002/3 to go back to SA. We are sure they originally were living in Hermanus but moved to unknown in 2004. Family details as follows:
Steve and Sharon Bailey. Steve is around 55 years age, 6 foot plus, slim build and very loud. He was born originally in the UK but raised in SA from young age. Sharon in around 45 years, 6 foot tall and blond haired, also very loud! They had 2 grown (now) children, Alex, now around 17 years, blond haired, looked to be potentially good rugby player (quite large), and Howard who is around 23 years also 6 foot + and slim build. Howard has the Bailey family name but to our knowledge Alex had either Sharon's maiden name or his natural fathers surname.

My name is Steve Doyle and my wife is Sue. We moved from UK just after the Bailey's and after numerous moves are now settled in France. If you need any more detail please just email. c/o editor@saw.co.za

    Thanks in anticipation.

    Hi Theo,

I was given your e-mail address by Albert from South Africa online as he thought you may be able to help us. We live in the UK and my husband, John Wakefield, is trying to trace his brother Anthony "Tony" Ditch who moved to South Africa in the mid 1970's with his wife, Carol Ann and their two small children, Caroline and Samantha.
The last address we have is PO Box 2876, Randburg, Johannesburg, South Africa but it is a very old address and we have had no response to letters sent to it. We do know that they were still in South Africa a couple of years ago, so we are now trying to find alternative ways of tracing them.
Tony will now be 65, John is 63 and they have another brother, David Eyre who is 69 and lives in Canada. They were seperated when small boys and it is possible that Tony is unaware of Johns existence. The only other leads we have are that he may have changed his surname to Eyre-Ditch and might have owned or managed a hotel. There are members of Tony's adopted family who would also like to contact him before it is too late, so any help or advise you can give would be appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from you.
    Many thanks

SAA Launches Direct Flights to US

The East African Standard (Nairobi) NEWS
    October 7, 2006
Posted to the web; October 7, 2006
    By Brian Adero; Nairobi

South African Airways (SAA) has announced the introduction of direct flights from Johannesburg to Washington DC.
Until now, SAA, a member of the Star Alliance, has been flying to Washington via Dakar in West Africa.

Mr Maurice Phohleli, the airline's manager for Africa and Middle East, says the direct services will be launched next month.
"This will be a six hour, non-stop flight from Johannesburg to Washington DC, " Phohleli told The Standard in Nairobi.

SAA will still maintain its daily flights to the US, flying an Airbus A340-600 to Washington and an Airbus 346-300 to New York City.

At the same time, the airlines have announced the introduction of their services to Bamako in January next year. "We have a wider plan for our expansion strategy and we want to concentrate on Central Africa route where we are introducing new flights" said Phohleli.

Daily flights to Nairobi from Johannesburg will be marinated, while morning flights from Uganda to South Africa have been introduced.

In readiness for the World Cup in 2010, the airline has announced a project team headed by a team manager, Capt. Mpho Mamashela, the only black captain to head the project. "We have a major plan for Africans flying to South Africa for the World Cup, and we are looking at how to accommodate African customers into the World Cup," he said.

Phohleli was speaking during the launch of Samantha's bridal brand by SAA in Nairobi. SAA Bride of the year 2007 campaign is expected to boost, serve and improve the standards of the fast growing wedding industry in Kenya and the region by creating an awareness of the best the market can offer.

This promotion is open to brides who get married between July 2006 and up to December.
Brides will participate by filling in entry forms available at Nakumatt supermarkets and selected wedding vendors.

Up for grabs are two business class return tickets to South Africa, hotel accommodation, guided tours, shopping vouchers, hotel and wedding gift packs.

Tutu ensures Shosholoza enjoys hotline to Him

October 08 2006 at 09:05AM By Di Meek

Retired Archbishop Desmond Tutu has given a special birthday present to South African sailing. He has agreed to be the patron of Team Shosholoza, South Africa's first challenger for sailing's prestigious 156-year-old America's Cup.

Archbishop Tutu, who celebrated his 75th birthday on Saturday, will meet the team for the first time on November 27 in Cape Town when they return home from Valencia, the Spanish host city for the 2007 America's Cup, for a two-month break.

"I love and respect the man as I love and respect Nelson Mandela," he said. "For me they represent the heart and soul of the new South Africa. It is something that we are trying to portray through Shosholoza.
