Already all the usual pre-Christmas things are accelerating towards the big day.
On e-mail one gets gorgeous Christmas cards; on websites more Christmas things,and of course in shops and malls the constant repetitive musical renditions as well.
Although the December holiday South Africa road-accident victims are already mounting up, my Medivac flights have been quiet here where I’m based. One can only hope that things remain quiet.
We’ve enjoyed that classic activity at our newly rented house - a garden braai - using fiery hot charcoal in a half-drum & grid, complete with all the requisite mod-cons. Do you remember? Steaks, chops, boerewors, tomato-bredie, krummelpap, salads and rounded off with cold, crispy watermelon, to name the most important items.
Mmmmmm.
Our friends & colleagues seemed to enjoy it as well, so the formula was right.
[braai = barbeque to non South Africans, bredie = cooked tomato, onion, garlic mixture, krummelpap = maize/corn-meal cooked with minimum of water rendering it crumbly.]
This is the last SAWmail for 2006... so I would like to wish readers a very happy and peaceful holiday season and best wishes for 2007.

Once upon a time, a church had fallen upon hard times. Only five members were left: the pastor and four others, all over 60 years old.
In the mountains near the church there lived a retired Bishop. It occurred to the pastor to ask the Bishop if he could offer any advice that might save the church. The pastor and the Bishop spoke at length, but when asked for advice, the Bishop simply responded by saying, "I have no advice to give. The only thing I can tell you is that the Messiah is one of you."
The pastor, returning to the church, told the church members what the Bishop had said. In the months that followed, the old church members pondered the words of the Bishop. "The Messiah is one of us?" they each asked themselves.
As they thought about this possibility, they all began to treat each other with extraordinary respect and gentleness on the off chance that one among them might be the Messiah. And on the off, off chance that each member himself might be the Messiah, they also began to treat themselves with extraordinary care.
As time went by, people visiting the church noticed the aura of respect and gentle kindness that surrounded the five old members of the small church. Hardly knowing why, more people began to come back to the church. They began to bring their friends, and their friends brought more friends. Within a few years, the small church had once again become a thriving church, thanks to the Bishop's gift.

Dramatic drop in ARV prices

Antiretrovirals are being procured by the South African government for only 5% of the price it was paying for them in 2001. This amazing decrease in ARV prices is a result of the voluntary licences granted by multi-nationals to generics manufacturers.
South African company Aspen Pharmacare currently sells a triple therapy generic ARV treatment consisting of 150mg Lamivudine, 40mg Stavudine and 200mg nevirapine to government for R97,27 per person a month.
According to the first edition of the report Accessing ARVs: Untangling the Web of Price Reductions for Developing Countries, by Médecins sans Frontières, the cheapest price for which the government could have procured the same triple therapy treatment in 2001 was $285 or R2 012 at current exchange rates.
The 150mg Lamivudine, 40mg Stavudine and 600mg Efavirenz triple therapy treatment, which two-thirds of those on treatment in South Africa use, is currently procured for R270, while in 2001 it cost $620 or R4 377.

Mbeki steps into Phumzile row

President Thabo Mbeki said those found responsible for the travel arrangements of deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka's trip to the UK should account for any wrongdoing, SABC radio news reported on Sunday. Mbeki was responding to recent reports that the deputy president's trip cost taxpayers a staggering R4.5m.
On Saturday defence minister Mosiuoa Lekota announced that he would appoint an independent board of inquiry into the hiring of a private jet to transport Mlambo-Ngcuka to Britain.

'Don't pay for Yengeni'

Independent Democrats president Patricia de Lille says she will call on parliament to oppose former African National Congress chief whip and convicted fraudster Tony Yengeni's application to the state to pay the legal costs involved in challenging his conviction in the Constitutional Court.
A Sunday newspaper reported that an attorney acting for Yengeni had sent a letter to secretary of parliament Zingile Dingani in an attempt to get funding.
Yengeni's bid apparently is built on a now-defunct law, Section 58 of the Powers and Privileges Act of 1963.
The act, which was repealed in 2004, provided MPs with immunity from arrest, imprisonment or damages, and civil and criminal proceedings.

War of words over Zim money

A public row erupted on Sunday between Zimbabwe's two top financial leaders over orders to print more money to keep the government afloat, thereby worsening the nation's already disastrous inflation.
Central bank governor Gideon Gono pinned responsibility on Finance Minister Herbert Murerwa, rejecting comments from the minister that the bank was to blame.

Z4 driver caught at 210km/h

Johannesburg metro police arrested a 31-year-old man for travelling at 210 kilometres per hour in his luxury car on the N14, between Krugersdorp and Pretoria, on Sunday.
Spokesperson senior superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the metro police would apply to have the BMW Z4 forfeited to the force.
The driver, an employee of a large mining house, was granted bail of R1 000 and was expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court soon.
Two other people stopped for speeding on the same road on Sunday morning were also given bail of R1000 and warned to appear in the same court, Minnaar said
One was driving a Volvo and the other a BMW.

Business confidence highest ever:
SACOB has announced that 103.2 was recorded for its Business Confidence Index (BCI) in November 2006. This is a new all time high and although the October BCI improvement was regarded as temporary, it now seems to have had more substance. The previous highest level of 103.1 was registered in April 2006.

Tourist arrivals skyrocketing:
The arrival statistics for August 2006 are in, and both regional and foreign arrivals have continued their upward trend. Foreign arrivals showed an 8% increase, with 701 991 arrivals in August 2006, compared with 650 290 in the same period last year. Of these, 172 812 were overseas travellers, an increase of 5,4%.
The leading source market was the UK, showing an increase of 2,3% (35015 to 35 834), followed by the US. Other key source markets in Europe also showed growth, while India showed a drop in arrivals. Arrivals from mainland Africa continued to skyrocket, up 9% from 481 986 in August 2005 to 525 501 in August 2006, with Lesotho the leading country of origin.
Truck sales hit new summit:
The South African truck market has broken the long-standing all-time record for annual sales, with one month of selling still remaining in the year. The total of 3 186 units reported to Naamsa during November, was also the second highest ever recorded for any individual month in this market's history, which propelled the year-to-date cumulative total for 2006 to 30 842 units. This is exactly 100 vehicles more than which was sold during the previous record year, 1981.

Two older ladies were sitting in the living room, waiting
for their slightly delayed hostess. The daughter of the
family was sitting with them, on the theory that she would
keep the visitors occupied during the wait.
The child was about six years old, freckled, and
bespectacled. She maintained a deep silence and the two
ladies peered doubtfully at her.
Finally, one of them muttered to the other, "Not very
p-r-e-t-t-y, I fear," carefully spelling the key word.

Top SA netball player killed

A member of the South African netball team, Yvonne Phiri, died in a car crash near Hartebeesfontein on Saturday night. Phiri, 21, was returning home from the national team's training camp at the High Performance Centre at Pretoria University. She had been included in the team to tour England in January.

All Blacks avenge themselves on Boks

New Zealand avenged their defeat to the Springboks in last week's Dubai final by winning 24-17 against the same opponents in the deciding game of the George leg of the IRB Sevens Series on Saturday. This means that the Springboks still have to break their duck when it comes to winning their home tournament, something they and their coach Paul Treu desperately wanted to do in their endeavour to further accelerate the growth of this form of the game in South Africa.
It is rare for a team to win successive tournaments within a week of each other in this series. Treu had said during the week that it would be a massive obstacle. That being so, the Boks should feel they blew a golden opportunity to do something quite unique, for there was no denying that they conspired against themselves when it mattered most.
They just made too many mistakes at critical times, both in terms of their handling and defensively, and this enabled New Zealand to keep themselves ahead on the scoreboard from the stroke of half time onwards.
